Pussy Riot’s Maria “Masha” Alyokhina and Ksenia Zhivago, in conversation with Zarina Zabrisky, will recount the story of their humanitarian and civil rights campaign, zeroing in on the current state of human rights in Russia. They will touch on LGBT rights, prisoner rights, Black Lives Matter, events in the Ukraine, and the character of Russian politics today. As part of the event, they will screen clips from “Pussy vs. Putin” (2013) and other protests.
Pussy Riot and its members, gained prominence across the globe for having gone to jail rather than abandon their guerilla-style performance art protests against Vladimir Putin’s shunning and criminalization of LGBT individuals, including the breaking up of LGBT families with children. The imprisonment of two Pussy Riot members, Nadya Tolokonnikova and Maria Alykhina, was represented in Netflix’s serialized feature “House of Cards,” in which Tolokonnikova, her husband Pytor Verzilov, and Alyokhina played themselves. An HBO documentary, “Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer,” was released in 2013.
Zabrisky is a San Francisco writer, born in Russia, and co-founder of The Arts Resistance, a collective that employs the arts to relate the story of opposing war and social and civil injustice.
